Shown first above is the model 725 soap dish. The most popular and available in 4 different mounting methods.
About the mounting methods:
The BA thin-set mount: It must set into a 5/16" deep or slightly greater depth inlay. Many people have referred to this as a recess mount. That is not correct. Thin-set is set in place where a piece of tile has been omitted, and thus it attaches to the same wall surface as the tile is attaching to. And it can be applied using the same waterproof adhesive. The 5/16" projection on the back is not the full size of the back. It is 4" x 4" for the BA725, and thus the full width and height of the soap dish does overlap adjacent tiles and grout lines.
The BF flat back mount: Designed to be glued onto ANY flat surface. Glue them over tile, wood, drywall, greenboard, or sheet rock. Flat back does not require the same inlay opening as thin-set. Flat back is great as an afterthought mounting. When you or someone who just tiled your wall would like to add a soap dish, you can do so with the flat back without having to chisel out any tiles. It saves time, and saves a lot of muscle work. And it allows you a lot of freedom as to where you position it.
The BC clip on mount: Great for drywall or wood walls. Can be used on tile too if you wish. Each clip on soap dish comes with one mounting clip, plastic anchors, and screws. The clip goes on the wall first, the dish slides down over it. On tile, you would need to drill into tile with a ceramic tile drill bit, and then definitely use the plastic anchors. A screw pushing against the plastic anchor is better than a screw pushing against ceramic. Less chance of breaking the ceramic.
The BM725 mud set mount: Popular with professional tile setters, and it does require a 1-1/4" or deeper hole to set into. Commonly put in with a mud pack (motar). Very common on sheet rock. Model 725 is the only soap dish on this page available in mud set mounting.
And the BR794 recessed mount: A very nice option when you do not want anything sticking out from the wall. The recessed soap dish must fit into a 6x6 opening approx. 3-1/2" deep. Then the flange of the dish just projects 3/8" off the wall surface. Nice for big bars of soap. Can hold bath bead jars and other short height canisters. The BR794 will be shown farther down the page.
Next, showing how the model 725 compares with the slightly narrower model 726 and also the wider model BA729. Model 726 comes in thin-set and flat back mounts. Model 729 comes as thin-set only.
Model 728 soap dish with the washcloth cradle. Available in thin-set and flat back mounts only.
Please note, the handle is not a grab bar. It is not a ladder, or a foot rest, or a dip bar. You might use it as an arm rest.... The handle is designed as a washcloth holder or a hanging bracket for light weight objects that will not damage it. Ceramic is not designed to support human weight.
Model 768 vanity top soap dish shown with its partner, model 770 toothbrush & tumbler holder. Model 768 and 770 come in thin-set, flat back, and clip on mounting methods. Just under 5" square.
The AR171 available in flat back only. This is a large soap dish, approx. 6x6. If you happen to have a big hole in the wall that you need to cover up, this is actually a solution to take care of that. It is also the only soap dish with a drain hole. AR151 is the same, but with a shell background pattern. The AR151 is shown on the Series 500 page.
Since the BR794 recessed soap dish is part of the 700 series, we are showing it here with the others. There is much more info about it on the Recessed soap dishes, TP holders, shower caddies page. Go there to view more details on it.

Repairing a broken thin-set soap dish:
If you broke the cradle off your soap dish similar to model 728, or smashed another dish by falling on it or dropping something on it, you have a task ahead of you. The remains of it will need to be removed from the wall before you can replace it. Many of the older style tub soap dishes fit into a 6" wide by 4" tall opening. So do not be surprised that when you finally get out all the pieces that you have that size opening. Most of the AC Products pieces for thin-set mount are designed to fit into a 4x4 opening. The BA729 requires a wider opening. But the pieces with the 4x4 opening will fit into an existing 6x4 opening with no problem. The soap dish will be plenty wide to cover the extra hole space. Just let the adhesive fill the gap (but without spilling out, don't use too much).
You can of course use flat back soap dishes also to mask an existing hole. Sometimes this is an easier approach.
Replacing recessed metal soap dishes:
Many people have the old style metal soap dishes recessed into their wall. Metal soap dishes and toilet paper holders are usually smaller than ceramic. They are one layer of metal. Whereas the ceramic are double wall. They are hollow press core and have an inside wall and an outside wall. So the recessed soap dish we have needs that 6x6 hole to drop into. The metal one coming out might be in a 5x5 hole. So if you intend to replace it with a ceramic one, you will need to enlarge your hole.
Plumbing in the way:
Sometimes when planning to use a recessed soap dish, you find out you have a pipe in the wall right where you want to put it. This destroys the whole plan, especially if you cut the hole already. Note, you will need to have about 3-1/2" of depth to fit a recessed soap dish in the wall. Not sure what you will find in the wall? Then cut a small hole first, large enough to fit a ruler through, and have a flashlight handy. Measure the hole depth you can achieve. And look in the wall for obstructions. It could save you some grief.
